(Excerpts from Montgomery Village Patch, by Ian Berry, June 14, 2011)
Montgomery County Councilman Craig Rice faced tough questions over road construction options outlined by the Midcounty Corridor Study. The study lays out a plan for extending Midcounty Highway north from Montgomery Village Avenue to Clarksburg. [M.C.'s Department of Transportation] lists six possible alternative routes in the plan for this 6-lane highway, designed to help ease congestion along Interstate270.
More than 50 residents whose homes would be affected by the alternatives voiced their concerns at a forum hosted by the Greater Goshen Civic Association at Gaithersburg Church of the Nazarene.
The decision on an alternative is set for next summer [2013]. Rice (D-Dist. 2) of Germantown called on critics to have an open dialogue and take an objective look at the project's needs and its various impacts.
“When the money does come, and it will come, we need to be ready to move forward. We are holding up development right now. We have to come up with something," Rice said, [who supports the master plan alignment alternative #9].
Write* or email Council Member Craig Rice to express your disapproval of his plan to vote on funding the 6-lane M-83 Mid-County Highway Extended.

The reason? Montgomery County staff are currently studying multiple transportation systems to propose alternatives that will achieve the purpose of M-83. These alternatives will
- avoid endangering our children by toxic pollutants from vehicles driving adjacent to Watkins Mill Elementary, Montgomery Village Middle and Sally Ride Elementary school grounds,
- avoid the division of established neighborhoods in Germantown, Montgomery Village and Gaithersburg,
- avoid the destruction of pristine forests in North Germantown-Greenway and Great Seneca Parks, and
- avoid the removal of wetlands along Dayspring Creek and Great Seneca Creek.
